Kah'ir holding his medal at the fire department

Sharon Hill School student Kah'ir Gibson used skills learned from a fire safety field trip to help his family quickly evacuate during a recent house fire.

Every year, the Southeast Delco Kindergarten Center spends two days with the Collingdale Fire Company’s fire prevention team. Kah’ir was among the kindergarten students who participated in this year’s fire safety training.

Six months later, he successfully put those skills into practice when a space heater in his home caught fire. Using the lessons from the safety training, Kah’ir alerted his family and helped everyone get out safely.

“We are incredibly proud of Kah’ir’s quick thinking and bravery, and we are so grateful that he and his family are safe,” said Superintendent Dr. Yamil Sanchez Rivera. “The Southeast Delco School District emphasizes the importance of safety inside and outside the classroom. We are grateful for our partnership with our local fire department and the meaningful difference it makes in the lives of our students and their families.”

The Collingdale Fire Company recognized Kah’ir for his bravery and credited him with helping prevent serious injuries. For his heroic actions, the department gifted him a plaque, a medal, and a custom fire jacket with a matching fire hat and pants.
