    Board & Community Update

    Staffing for 2014 / 2015

District administrators are continuing to review staff assignments and enrollment figures to determine the best possible use of resources while remaining fiscally responsible to the community. Kindergarten registration for the 2014 / 2015 school year has begun and we will be monitoring enrollment totals to determine how to best meet the programming needs for the Kindergarten students. Class size in the grades 1 through 8 buildings will be monitored throughout the summer to determine its affect on teacher placement.

Academy Park course selection has also begun. This is the process through which the district finalizes the courses of instruction for each teacher and which course offerings are available to students.

    MP900426562[1]Cyber Success

Included in the review of personnel and resources is the commitment to the design of the Southeast Delco Cyber Program.  Enrollment in the district program has increased dramatically since its inception three years ago. As the program heads into its fourth year of existence, we are continuing to look for ways to improve the program and meet the varying needs of students. One of the ways being considered is to have a classroom staffed throughout the day at the high school so students could receive assistance at any time. If approved, we will make this a part of selling points when we recruit charter families back to the district.

    Safe School Initiative Grant

The Department of Education’s Office for Safe Schools has awarded the district a grant of $22,000 to help improve school security and safety. The district will use the funds to review and modify our current emergency response plans and provide professional development for staff. The project will be conducted by each school’s Building Emergency Response Team (BERT).  Several safety scenarios will be explored to ensure an effective response in the event of an actual emergency.

Any remaining funds will be used to support current violence prevention programs, both responsive classrooms and restorative practices.

    Curriculum and Textbooks

MP900442442[1]This year curriculum has been focused on updating English / Language Arts. In the current spring 2014 semester, English / Language Arts teachers in grades 6, 7, 8 will continue to pilot a second series, Collections, from Houghton / Harcourt. Because at the same time, we are updating the high school literature texts and resources, the high school is also piloting two series during the second semester in grades 9-12. A decision, after much discussion and comparison, will be made in April, 2014, and materials will be purchased for the next school year, dependent upon School Board approval on the adoption.

For 2014-15, the curriculum cycle will focus on Science in grades K-12, which indicates that we will be updating our texts and curriculum to align with the PA Common Core and to prepare our students for the high stakes PSSA and Keystones in Science and Biology. The pilots will occur during the 2014-2015 school year with purchase of new resources in spring 2015.
