    Positive Behavior Support Initiative (PBIS)

    What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Intervention Support is a collaborative, assessment-based approach to developing effective interventions for problem behaviors. it emphasizes the use of proactive, educative, and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behavior and lifestyle outcomes. PBIS aims to build effective environments in which positive behavior is more effective than problem behavior.

Positive Behavior Support at Darby Township School

Positive Behavior Support will allow us the opportunity to provide a consistent and fair behavior plan.

Research shows us that students achieve at a higher level when they know the expectations and feel safe.

PBIS will improve both of these. Our Matrix provides detailed expectations in every area of the school while putting an extreme emphasis on safety.

Guidelines for Teaching Positive Expectations (The Matrix)

How long should it take to teach the behaviors of the Matrix? Plan to teach the expectations over the first two weeks of school. Lessons will need to be repeated and expectations will be strongly reinforced throughout the year. The PBS team will provide weekly "Honor Among Knights" lessons. The lesson will be taught every Monday during the responsive classroom to aid in setting the tone for the week.

How often should I teach the Matrix through the remainder of the year? As problems arise in a certain area or time of the day then re-teach the expectation for that time or location.

What do you mean by "teach" the expectations? I always go over the class rules. By teaching, we mean show, as in the model, demonstrate, or role-play. Have the students get up and practice exactly what you want them to do. Have fun with it.
